Beds and Blankets
For the bed is too short to stretch out on,
And the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in
Isaiah 28:20
Everyone knows about beds and blankets. We all know the comfort of stretching out and covering up, but imagine a cold Winter night and how you would feel if you were trying to rest on a bed too short with a blanket too narrow.
A great many people are expecting to find a resting place at the end of this life, but they are making the mistake of trusting in short beds and narrow blankets.

Lust for the “Almighty Dollar” has created a new generation of success driven pastors and churches. Instead of "Christ and Him crucified", parishioners hear about how to be successful and contented. Have you noticed, however, that people who cherish success never seem to have enough? It is because success is a bed too short and a covering too narrow.
Those who boast in their success need to remember “ … you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” 1 Peter 1:18-19
Religious Things Are a Bed Too Short And a Blanket Too Narrow.
The number of people who try to rest on religious things is growing every day.
For some it is religious statues or jewelry. For others it is “prosperity cloths”
and “anointed oil”. People buy these religious trinkets believing that their troubles will all go away, but they do not.
Just as the people who cherish success never have enough, so also are those who depend on religious charms. They are never truly comfortable. They are always going back for more oil, another charm, or another feeling. They are never comfortable because the bed of “religion gadgets” is always too short and its covering is never sufficient.
God Has Provided a Sufficient Resting Place and a Complete Cover
The “Good News” of the Bible is that God has provided a bed that is long enough for anyone to stretch out, and a covering which will completely cover all who believe.
Have you considered the fact that one day you will stand in judgment before God. If, on that day, you try to cover yourself with your own religious deeds, you will discover that they are nothing but filthy rags. If you try to convince God that you have done a sufficient number of good works you will discover that salvation is “ not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,” Titus 3:5
The only sufficient resting place, and the only sufficient covering for sin is the
Lord Jesus Christ. On the cross, Jesus took the sinner’s place. He died to do something that no one else could do: He removed sin.
Only the person and work of Jesus Christ is sufficient. Only in Christ Jesus will you discover a bed for the weary and a covering for the sinner. Through faith you will discover that believers are “ … justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” Romans 3:24
