WHO WE ARE

The Sluggard

A  “Sluggard” is a person who is habitually lazy.

Perhaps you already have someone in mind when you think about a “sluggard.”  Perhaps it is a co-worker, perhaps it’s your husband or wife,  or perhaps one of your own children.  If you are thinking about a  co-worker you are probably angry.

If you are thinking about a family member,  it most likely saddens you.  In either case, no one likes a “sluggard”  except, of course,  another “sluggard.”

Here are just a few lessons about the “Sluggard” that we learn from the Bible:

SLUGGARDS ARE LIKE DOOR HINGES

It is almost comical.  The Bible describes the “sluggard” as someone who is hinged to his bed.  “ As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed.”  Prov. 26:14

Parents often complain that their children are hinged to the bed. The teenage “sluggard” rises late in the day and finds that Mom has prepared his meal and folded his laundry.   This is exactly how the Bible describes the “sluggard”. He is

a person too lazy to even care for himself.  “The sluggard buries his hand in

the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.”  Proverbs 26:15

You might be asking yourself, “How does this happen?  Was the teenage “sluggard”  born or created?”   The answer is “created”   Although it is easy to be lazy, parents should not allow lazy children to turn into  “sluggards.”

Many Parents Who Are Complaining About A “Sluggard” At Work,  Are Raising One At Home.

SLUGGARDS ARE ALWAYS MAKING EXCUSES

Remember “The Little Rascals” movies?   One movie began with a little boy laying in bed and moaning to his mother  “I can’t go to school today, Mom, I’m too sick”

His mother answered, “You don’t have to, Honey, today is Saturday.”  He immediately leaped from bed and began to sing and dance.

Have you ever called into work and said  “I’m too sick to come to work,”  and under your breath said, “But not too sick for a round of golf.”?

The Bible says that the “sluggard” makes ridiculous excuses.  He calls up the boss and says  "There is a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!"

( I cannot come to work.)   Prov. 26:13

HAVING A “SLUGGARD” ON THE TEAM, OR IN YOUR HOME,  IS NOT FUNNY.

(1)     “Sluggards” bring pain and disappointment to everyone else Prov. 10:26

(2)     “Sluggards” cause waste everywhere they put their hands  Prov. 19:24

(3)     “Sluggards”  will not face the fact that they are a drain on society  Prov. 20:4

There is a great deal of laziness in the United States today.  A great number of people believe that Mom and Dad or society at large owes them a living.  Christians, however, teach that  everyone should work hard; both at home and on the job.  2 Thessalonians 3:10

THE WORSE “SLUGGARD” OF ALL

The worse sluggard of all is the “Sunday Morning Sluggard”. This “sluggard” has no trouble getting up on Saturday for a day of fun.  He will have no problem getting up on Monday to go to work,  but on Sunday he will be hinged to his bed and have

a dozen excuses for being there.

This is no laughing matter.  The Monday morning “sluggard” might lose his job, but the Sunday morning “sluggard” might lose his soul.
