God Has Invited Us To Study The Stars
Billions of dollars were spent to build and launch the Hubble Space Telescope. Some people think that this is a total waste of money. Christians, however, believe that what we are doing is what our God has invited us to do.
“Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power; Not one is missing”. Isaiah 40:26
How Long Have These Stars Been There?
This question is fuel for a heated argument. Some people argue that the universe is quite young; no more than 10,000 years. Others argue that it is much older. However old the stars are, The Bible tells us that God made them.
Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. Genesis 1:16
How Does The Universe Keep Moving?
Do you realize how difficult it is for us to keep things moving? In order for us to keep anything in motion we must constantly be applying energy. Our cars must have engines to keep them going. The bicycle requires constant pedalling or it will fall over. Even something as simple as a child’s swing must be constantly activated or it will stop.
Now look at the universe. There are innumerable stars and perhaps every one of them has a set of planets. Each is moving on and on with exact precision. Comets move in and out of our solar system with such precision that we can predict their return. It is clear that this grand system has been running like this for a very long time. What keeps it moving?
The answer is that our Lord keeps things moving:
“ …. He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power …. “ Hebrews 1:1-3
Why has God Invited Us To Investigate The Heavens?
He has invited us to explore His universe in order that we might see the complexity of it all, and come to the conclusion that there must be a designer.
God invites us to search the universe, so that we will also search for the One who designed it all.
I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me. Proverbs 8:17
There are innumerable things in the heavens which clearly tell us that there is design in it all. All of this order tells us that there is a Creator, and the Bible tells us that the Creator is none other than Jesus Christ.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. John 1:1-3
