Why Does My Neighbor Go To Church?

“Why does my neighbor go to church every week?”

“Sunday is my day,  a day to do  My stuff.”

If that sounds like something you might say, you are not alone.   On every street in America today, most of the homes are occupied by people who seldom or never go to church.   Christians, on the other hand,  attend church as often as they can, and since you asked,

let me tell you why.

Christians Go To Church Because Their Lord Has Ordered Them To Do So   Christians recognize Jesus as both their Savior and Lord.  They  are, therefore,  very interested in both listening to what Jesus said, and obeying Him.  That is what church is

all about.  It is a place where people gather to sing, pray, and praise their Lord.  It is also

a place where pastors teach us about God’s way and warn us about the wrong way.

Church attendance is part of what Jesus had in mind when He said  this to His followers:

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.   Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.      Matthew 5:14-16

Christians Go To Church Because They Need It  -  Ask your Christian neighbors about how they became a Christian, and most of them will begin by telling you about  “Church.”   Most people first heard about salvation,  received faith,  and fell in love with the Gospel of Jesus Christ at church.

Christians, however,  not only love the Gospel, they need it.   They need to hear that the full price of their redemption has been paid.  They need to hear that their Savior holds them in His hands.   Church is where Christians are revitalized  week after week,  This weekly intake of “Gospel Truth”  is as important to Christians as bread & water.

Christians Go To Church Because There Is Something At Church Which They Cannot Find Anywhere Else  -  A Special Kind Of Fellowship  -  Everyone enjoys the fellowship of a family reunion, but, for the Christian, there is another fellowship which is far better.   The greatest fellowship this side of Heaven is that fellowship that Christians enjoy when they assemble together on Sunday mornings.

When Americans travel to foreign countries they try to meet and greet the citizens of those countries.   They are, as it were, fellowshipping with the people.   If, however, they hear English being spoken they will be immediately drawn to it.  Fellowship at church is like that to those who are Christians.  In church Christians find people who love what they love,  and talk like they talk.

Christians Go To Church Because It Helps Them Fill Their Responsibility to Be a Good Example.  -  People hear what you say,  but they also see what you do.  When professing Christians lay out of church week after week their actions are speaking louder than their words.  They are also committing  two other serious sins.

The first sin is this:   Professing Christians who do not attend church are,  by example, telling their neighbors that church attendance is not an important thing.

This paper has already shown you that church attendance is very important.  “Church” is the primary place where our Lord and Savior is honored and praised.  When we ignore the weekly gathering of God’s people we are telling our friends and neighbors that “church attendance” is not important, and that is a sin

The second sin is this:  Professing Christians who do not attend church are, by example, showing disrespect for that which Jesus purchased with His own Blood.  Through Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection the church came to life.  When  professing Christians stay home from church week after week,  they are looking down on that which Jesus purchased with His own precious blood.  To despise the Lord’s church is a sin.

If you are a Christian, you know that what you have just read is the truth.  If you have been neglecting church attendance you need to turn your life back to your Lord and Savior.   If you are not a Christian I hope you will see your need to become one.

The person who handed you this paper truly wants you to see what a wonderful thing you are missing.  Jesus went to The Cross to purchase His church,  don’t ignore it.   Attend next Sunday.
