THE NEXT TIME YOUR CHRISTIAN FRIEND

SPEAKS TO YOU ABOUT YOUR SOUL

Has anyone ever talked to you about becoming a Christian?  Probably.  What was your response?  Many say it angers them when a friend tries to  “Cram religion down their throat”

Do you find the thought of a Christian witnessing to you to be unpleasant?  If so, consider three things.

Try To Understand His Motive.

Your Christian friend witnesses to you for one reason.  He cares deeply about what happens to you.  He honestly believes that all who are not Christians are facing a terrible thing indeed – eternity separated from God.

You may already be protesting.  You don’t believe in any such thing as eternal separation or hell or whatever!

Lay that aside for a moment and consider this picture.  You are swimming in your pool.  Your neighbor sees you and waves at you.  What he doesn’t see is that you have your TV with you.  Suddenly he hears someone crying “Help!  Help!”.  He immediately rushes to help you only to learn that the cry was coming from the television.

Would it make you angry for your neighbor to do such a thing even though the danger was not real?  The important thing is that your neighbor thought it was real and cared enough to come to your aid.  How could you fault him for caring?  Neither should you fault your Christian friend for trying to save you from a danger that he perceives to be real and quickly approaching.

Don’t Assume He Is a Hypocrite

This seems to be the favorite response of non-Christians.  The failure of prominent Christian leaders has been well documented, so much so, that some are eager to conclude that all Christians are phonies and Christianity is a farce.

The thing so many fail to see is that every field of human endeavor has its hypocrites,  Some doctors are quacks, but we don’t stop doctoring.  Some car salesmen are dishonest, but we don’t stop driving.  Some politicians are corrupt, but we don’t leave the country.

In each case, we let the value of the product override the flaws in those who offer it.  But, when it comes to Christianity, we tend to lose sight of the value of the product and concentrate on the deficiencies of those who offer it.

The ironic thing is that Jesus Himself warned that there would be hypocrites among His followers.  That should not surprise us.  Only that which is genuine and valuable is ever counterfeited.  But finding counterfeit money would not stop us from using real money.  We should also not allow counterfeit religion to keep us from that which is true.

Please Consider That Your Friend May Be Telling You The Truth

Don’t take the message of your Christian friend lightly.  You may find it hard to believe, but the Christian has very substantial reasons for believing as he does.  It is not mere speculation that causes him to believe.  He believes because the truth about Jesus Christ compels him to believe.

Why should we pay attention to Jesus?  His resurrecting from the grave is the supreme proof among many that He was God in human flesh.

Can we be assured that Jesus actually arose from the grave?  Frank Morison, a British lawyer, set out many years ago to prove the resurrection a hoax.  He correctly assumed that Christianity would die if the resurrection could be disproved.  He intended to research that matter carefully and write a book exploding the resurrection of Jesus.  His research did lead to a book, but it was not the one that he set out to write.  It was a book entitled  Who Moved The Stone?

In the process of his research, Morrison found so much evidence for the resurrection that he could no longer deny it.

Earlier I urged you to see your Christian friend as one who seeks to come to your aid because he perceives you to be in great danger.  I left open the question of whether your Christian friend is correct in his assessment of your situation.  Now I say to you on the authority of the risen Lord that your Christian friend is correct in his assessment.  The next time he speaks to you about his faith, give him a careful hearing and turn in repentance and faith to the only one who can save you from the wrath to come – Jesus Christ
